What do you do when your instrument’s invitation to the rococo salon party gets “lost in the mail”? You crash the party! Flûte Alors! brings the recorder (which had begun to fall out of fashion at that point) to the late 18th-century salon with all-new arrangements of quartet sonatas. A concert dedicated to the work of John Dowland (1563-1626) for the 400th anniversary of his death. On the programme, the complete collection Lachrimæ, or seaven teares figured in seaven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, in five parts, published in London in 1604. Recorder player Sophie Larivière will join Flûte Alors! to complete the five-part consort.
One line calls another, one gesture causes a second. The voices overlap, the bodies echo them.
To close their 2026-2027 season, Flûte Alors! sets counterpoint – a compositional process that superimposes multiple independent melodic lines in an organized manner – in motion. A show where four recorders and four contemporary dancers exchange and engage in the same space.
On the programme: a dialogue between breath and gesture with works by Josquin, Palestrina, Bach, Shostakovich and Glass.
